| Abstract |
- "... is a six part series of programs highlighting the positive contributions of Black Americans. ... This particular episode deals with three women all striving to succeed despite any racial or economic barriers. It is the story of how Marcia Gillespie who at the age of 24 became editor of a new women's magazine Essence and how she developed that magazine during her ten years as editor. The program also features fashion expert Audrey Smaltz who started her own company with little funds and how she became a specialist in the area of fashion, health and beauty for Black women. The last segment is the ... story of a young, deaf ice skater Adrienne America and how her parents dealt with the discovery of her deafness. Because of her deafness, young Adrienne became involved in ice skating and is now preparing for the U.S. Olympics for the deaf."--1980 Peabody Awards entry form excerpt. Includes footage of: a speech by Marcia Gillespie at the Hampton Institute in which she discusses her job and the need for blacks to continue the fight for equality; a fashion show produced by Audrey Smaltz for the Congressional Black Caucus Fashion Review; and of Adrienne America skating
